So it took me way too long to catch up with this series but Ryan is a character that you DO NOT forget about regardless of how much time goes by !! Holy crap he blew me away in book 1 , I mean I thought Blake was the screwy one but then BAM we meet Ryan and he just kept showing us these pieces of himself that made you shudder. Just when you feel safe and life is going good here he comes to shake things up a bit.Blake and Mel have been living a great life for 18 years since all that horrible tragic crap we faced with them in Empathy. Their daughter Cereus is in high school and although she is a beautiful and bright girl she tends to be a loner , she is an artist and her one friend is not someone her dad cares much for. Up until recently things had been smooth. Blake and Mel will always live with the scars of their past but Cereus has never been tainted by them. She has no cue about her Uncle Ryan or what really happened to her grandparents or that anything even happened to her parents. We all know how secrets come out and destroy lives....this secret is a big one and not only will it destroy them but the person attached to it will be there egging it on. Or so you think.
Ryan's release is sending Blake over the edge. He is pulling away , lying and his actions are making Mel question their relationship. As Blake puts the puzzle pieces together around the weird events happening around the time his brother has been out you won't believe just how deep this goes and that Ryan may not be the only dark & twisted soul out there. This part of the series is heartbreaking in so many ways. Cereus is coming into her own and you can tell she is not like other kids her age , Blake is turning into someone he doesn't want to be , Mel is also acting out which is unlike her and of course Ryan is still Ryan but ironically there may be someone trying to one up him. It is a rollercoaster ride of crazy and the end is just WOW. We shall see how this moves on...

Well, once again I'm left reeling from the end. Even had a few tears in my eyes. A lot of things change in this book and once again the events that played out in this one blew me away.
Ryan is out! He played everyone in the hospital to an exact science. He's still sick and twisted but da#n if you can't help but to be drawn to him. Hoping that he has empathy, but he doesn't feel or so he thinks. Cererus I loved this character and to be some what like Ryan but with more light she was beautiful.
Mel and Blake are still hot as ever but Blake is keeping secrets again, dark ones to protect is family but it's going to cost him. But at what price??? He knows his brother is incapable of change and he will do whatever it takes to protect what's his including killing his own brother.
I was floored when the truth came out and the set ups behind all the murders. Once again the author proves to keep you intrigued and glued to this to the very end.
This is the second book in the Empathy series and it was just as good as the first!!! I'm enjoying all the twisted things that Ker Dukey comes up with!!!
Ryan, Ryan, Ryan, you are one twisted dude, but I find myself rooting for you when I know I shouldn't. I was a little worried when you found out you had a niece, but I was amazed at how well you treated her.
This book is a whole lotta twisted!!!! I thought I had it figured out than BAM Ker mixed things up and I love when she does that and truly should never had expected less.
If you can handle dark, twisted, murder, blood, rape, and all the bad things than this is the book for you. Do yourself a favor and read Empathy first, so that your familiar with the characters and its truly a good book if your into dark reads.

Ker Dukey impressed me with the first novel in this series, Empathy, a few months ago. I signed up to review the second book and found myself delighted when the ARC landed in my e-mail. I wanted to read it ASAP, but ended up purchasing the novel on as it is now released, because I genuinely want to show the author my support. I finished the novel in one day, and once more, Dukey did not disappoint. I’d just like to warn you in advance this book is deliciously sick and twisted, and will take you on a very dark ride.
Let’s start with the problems I had with this book and get the negatives out of the way first. It was the same as with the first book for me – while Dukey’s imagination is wild and amazing, I felt like the book needed a bit more editing. There were a few typos, some strange narration … but not enough to stop me reading! And that’s pretty much the bad news.
The good news?
Desolate is just as dark, just as sick as the first novel, if not more. I felt like Ryan grew as a character in a very unconventional way. He became ever more scary, more needy for pain and pleasure (sometimes together), more twisted … I often search for dark novels on Goodreads and am left unimpressed by what I find, but Desolate had me so scared, I felt goosebumps erupt on my skin! I even felt sick at some points, so I’d really say this isn’t for the faint hearted. But if you love twisted reads like me, you won’t be able to put this baby down.
Ker Dukey has an amazing imagination. She weaves the story seamlessly, managing to make me feel butterflies and making my stomach turn in the space of a few pages. She is a skilled storyteller and I believe she has many, many stories left to tell.
I think she truly excels in her story lines. The plot and twists are where the magic happens with Dukey, and she always manages to create a story that is impossible to put down. Once you reach the second third of the book, you will be glued to it, I promise you that.
Top recommendation, only knocking half a star off as I felt it could benefit from an edit.
